Tahfizh Makkah School has undertaken a noble mission to nurture a Quranic generation that excels not only in memorizing the Quran but also in mastering a broad spectrum of beneficial knowledge. This approach aligns with the Islamic principle of maintaining balance between religious and worldly sciences, as reflected in the Quranic verse:

وَابْتَغِ فِيمَا آتَاكَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلدَّارَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ وَلَا تَنسَ نَصِيبَكَ مِنَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا

“But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world."
(Surah Al-Qasas: 77)

This verse underscores the importance of striving for success in both this world and the Hereafter, forming a foundational philosophy for the school.

As a tahfizh-based educational institution, Tahfizh Makkah School emphasizes Quranic memorization as the spiritual and intellectual cornerstone for its students. The process of memorizing the Quran not only enhances memory but also cultivates noble character and moral integrity, in line with the saying of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ

"The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Quran and teach it."
(Sahih Bukhari: 5027)

This hadith (Prophetic Traditions) serves as a guiding principle for the school in designing a sustainable and high-quality tahfizh program.

The school’s curriculum goes beyond Quranic memorization, integrating general sciences such as mathematics, natural sciences, and languages with Islamic studies, including tauhid (Islamic theology), fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and hadith. This holistic approach aims to produce students who are not only proficient Quran memorizers but also capable leaders, ready to contribute meaningfully to society.

The teaching methods at Tahfizh Makkah School are designed to be both flexible and inspiring. Learning takes place in formal classrooms as well as in the mosque environment, fostering a sense of spiritual enrichment. This dual setting allows students to acquire academic knowledge while internalizing Quranic values in their daily lives. For instance, Quranic memorization sessions are complemented by group muroja’ah (revision activities), which not only reinforce memorization but also instill a collective sense of responsibility among students to preserve the words of Allah.

This balanced approach has proven effective in developing students who are intellectually sharp and spiritually mature. Graduates of Tahfizh Makkah School are envisioned to be strong Muslim individuals with broad insights, ready to face modern challenges without losing their Islamic identity. Such a model of education is expected to inspire other tahfizh schools in their efforts to build an excellent Muslim community.

The integration of Quranic memorization and mastery of beneficial knowledge, as practiced at Tahfizh Makkah School, highlights the essential role of knowledge in Islam. As Imam Ash-Shafi’i (may Allah have mercy on him) stated in Manaqib Ash-Shafi’i:

مَنْ أَرَادَ الدُّنْيَا فَعَلَيْهِ باِلعِلْمِ وَمَنْ أَرَادَ الآخِرَةَ فَعَلَيْهِ باِلعِلْمِ وَمَنْ أَرَادَهُمَا فَعَلَيْهِ باِلعِلْمِ

"Whoever desires the world must have knowledge. Whoever desires the Hereafter must have knowledge. And whoever desires both must have knowledge.”
(Manaqib Ash-Shafi’i, 2:139)

With this spirit, Tahfizh Makkah School continues to innovate in its mission to cultivate a generation that not only loves the Quran but is also equipped to contribute to the advancement of Islamic civilization in the future.

Islamic studies at Tahfizh Makkah School

Tahfizh Makkah School adopts a comprehensive approach to religious education, aiming to nurture a generation of Muslims who are firmly grounded in their faith (aqidah), capable of understanding and practicing obligatory acts of worship in accordance with Islamic principles, and exemplifying noble character.

The school’s religious studies curriculum is systematically designed to address the needs of its students, drawing from authentic Islamic sources and guided by the teachings of scholars from the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah. This ensures that the educational framework remains both reliable and relevant to the spiritual and intellectual growth of the students.

The primary focus areas of religious education at Tahfizh Makkah School include; tauhid, fiqh, hadith, Arabic language, hifzul mutun (memorization of texts), khot (Islamic calligraphy).

1. Tauhid

The study of tauhid at Tahfizh Makkah School is centered on teaching the oneness of Allah, encompassing its three key dimensions: Rububiyyah (Affirming Allah’s oneness in creation, sovereignty, and governance), Uluhiyyah (Recognizing Allah’s exclusive right to be worshipped), Asma wa Sifat (Understanding and affirming Allah’s names and attributes as described in the Quran and Sunnah).

This structured and gradual approach ensures that students grasp the true concept of Islamic aqidah, as emphasized in the Quran:

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

"And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”
(Surah Adh-Dhariyat: 56)

By internalizing tauhid, students are nurtured to develop hearts that rely solely on Allah, attributing all achievements and outcomes to His will. One of the anticipated outcomes of this education is the cultivation of emotional balance. Students learn not to excessively rejoice over success nor despair over setbacks, understanding that all outcomes are decreed by Allah and are ultimately for their benefit. This perspective is beautifully articulated in the Quran:

“No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy ( 23 ) In order that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.”
(Surah Al-Hadid: 22-23)

A proper understanding of tauhid instills resilience, optimism, and humility in students. It serves as a fortress of faith, equipping them to face the challenges of the modern era, including the rise of deviant ideologies and distractions.

2. Fiqh

Fiqh is taught at Tahfizh Makkah School as a practical framework for implementing Islamic teachings in daily life. The curriculum covers rulings on acts of worship, such as prayer (salah), fasting (sawm), and almsgiving (zakat), as well as muamalah guidelines for social interactions and transactions.

This comprehensive approach ensures that students not only learn the legal rulings but also understand the wisdom (hikmah) behind each provision of Islamic law. Such an understanding fosters a deeper appreciation of the Shariah and its relevance to personal and societal well-being.

Imam Ash-Shafi’i (may Allah have mercy on him) eloquently emphasized the virtues of studying fiqh:

من تعلم القرآن عظمت قيمته، ومن نظر في الفقه نبل قدره، وفي رواية جعفر: نبل مقداره، ومن كتب الحديث قويت حجته، ومن نظر في اللغة رق طبعه، ومن نظر في الحساب جَزُل رأيه، ومن لم يصن نفسه لم ينفعه علمه

"Whoever learns the Quran, his worth is magnified. Whoever delves into fiqh, his rank is elevated. In the narration of Ja'far, it is stated: his status is ennobled. Whoever writes down hadith, his argument is strengthened. Whoever studies language, his disposition is refined. Whoever learns mathematics, his reasoning becomes sharp. And whoever does not discipline himself, his knowledge will not benefit him.”
(Manaqib Ash-Shafi’, 1:282)

Through the study of fiqh, students are equipped to practice Islam accurately and consistently. This not only strengthens their personal faith but also prepares them to engage with the complexities of modern life while adhering to Islamic principles.

3. Hadith

The study of hadith at Tahfizh Makkah School aims to familiarize students with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, encompassing his sayings, actions, and approvals. This foundational knowledge enables students to understand how Islam was practically implemented by the Prophet ﷺ, serving as a guide for their own lives.

The significance of transmitting and understanding the hadith is beautifully emphasized in the words of the Prophet ﷺ:

نَضَّرَ اللهُ امْرَأً سَمعَ مِنَّا شيئًا، فَبلّغَهُ كما سَمعَ، فَرُبَّ مُبلَّغٍ أوْعَى من سامعٍ

“May Allah gladden a man who hears something from us, so he conveys it as he heard it. Perhaps the one it is conveyed to is more understanding than the one who heard it.”
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi: 2657; Sunan Ibn Majah: 232)

The selection of hadiths in the curriculum is tailored to ensure relevance and ease of understanding, allowing students to internalize and apply these teachings in their daily lives. The hadith memorization program is systematically structured across grade levels:

Grades I and II, Students begin by memorizing short and simple hadiths that align with their developmental abilities.

Grades III and IV, Students progress to memorizing Matan Arba’in An-Nawawi (Imam An-Nawawi’s 40 Hadith), a collection of essential hadiths that provide a comprehensive understanding of core Islamic teachings.

Grades V and VI, Students focus on hadiths related to Islamic etiquette (adab) and daily adhkar (remembrances of Allah), following specific memorization targets set by the program.

4. Arabic language

The Arabic language program at Tahfizh Makkah School emphasizes the mastery of the language that unlocks the understanding of the Quran and Sunnah. This curriculum covers four foundational skills: listening (istima’), speaking (kalam), reading (qira’ah), and writing (kitabah). Through a gradual approach, students are introduced to basic vocabulary, everyday conversation, and foundational Arabic grammar (nahwu and sharaf).

The primary goal of this program is to enable students to comprehend the Quran and Hadith directly from their original sources. This, in turn, enhances the quality of their worship and deepens their connection with Allah ﷻ. As Allah says in the Quran:

إِنَّآ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ قُرۡءَ ٰنًا عَرَبِیًّا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ

"Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran that you might understand.”
(Surah Yusuf: 2)

Through learning Arabic, students can engage with their faith more intimately, ensuring the preservation of its authenticity and values in their daily lives

Learning Arabic equips students not only with communication skills but also with an appreciation for the linguistic beauty of the Quran. This understanding fosters a profound engagement with Islamic values, enriching their knowledge of aqidah, ibadah (worship), and muamalah. As Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) stated:

تعلموا العربية، فإنها من دينكم

"Learn Arabic, for it is part of your religion.”
(Mu’jam Tauhid, 1:423)

Additionally, the study of Arabic instills perseverance, patience, and a love for knowledge in students. By mastering the language, they are better equipped to avoid misunderstandings of Islamic teachings and serve as ambassadors of the Arabic language, spreading its virtues and benefits within their communities.

4. Hifzul Mutun

One of the distinctive features of education at Tahfizh Makkah School is the program for memorizing mutun. These texts include hadiths, poetic compositions, or concise treatises across various fields of Islamic knowledge, recognized by scholars for their significant benefits. This method is designed to enhance students' memory, facilitate their understanding, and enable them to apply Islamic knowledge correctly in the future. As Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) remarked:

"من حفظ المتون حاز الفنون"

"Whoever memorizes mutun will master the sciences.”
(Khutuwat ila as-Sa’adah, p. 124)

The Hifzul Mutun program at Tahfizh Makkah School begins in Grade 3 and continues through Grade 6, with the following structure:

a. Grade 3, Students memorize Matan Tuhfatul Atfal, a foundational text on the rules of Quranic recitation (tajwid). They also begin memorizing Matan Muqaddimah Al-Jazariyah, which details the correct articulation of letters and their attributes (makharij and sifat).

b. Grade 4, The focus shifts to tauhid through the memorization of Matan Qawaidul Arba', which explains the four foundational principles of faith. Students also study Matan Nawaqidul Islam, which outlines actions and beliefs that nullify one’s Islam. During Grades 3 and 4, students also memorize Matan Arba’in An-Nawawi, a collection of 40 essential hadiths that serve as a cornerstone for understanding Islamic teachings.

c. Grade 5, Students delve deeper into aqidah by memorizing Matan Usul Ath-Thalathah, which elaborates on the three fundamental principles of Islamic faith: belief in Allah, His Messenger, and the religion of Islam.

d. Grade 6, As a culmination of the program, students engage in a muroja’ah of all the texts they have memorized throughout their studies.

5. Khot

The study of khot at Tahfizh Makkah School aims to equip students with the skills to write Arabic text correctly, adhering to linguistic rules. This art of writing not only enhances students’ technical ability to produce well-crafted Arabic script but also instills discipline and attention to detail. Moreover, learning calligraphy fosters a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Arabic, the language of the Quran.

All religious studies at Tahfizh Makkah School are taught by teachers who, in sha Allah, are highly qualified in their respective fields. The teaching process is not solely focused on the acquisition of knowledge but also emphasizes the practical application of Islamic values in daily life. This holistic approach ensures that students are not only intellectually capable but also possess noble character, reflecting Islam’s vision for nurturing the best generation.

Allah ﷻ says in the Quran:

كُنْتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ

“You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.”
(Surah Ali Imran: 110)

Through this structured and integrative approach, Tahfizh Makkah School provides students with authentic Islamic knowledge while simultaneously shaping their character to navigate the challenges of life. This education prepares them for success in this world and ultimate happiness in the Hereafter.

General studies at Tahfizh Makkah School

Tahfizh Makkah School places great emphasis not only on religious education but also on teaching beneficial general subjects. This balanced approach aims to nurture a generation of Muslims who excel both spiritually and intellectually, in line with the words of Allah:

قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي ٱلَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُونَ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ۗ

"Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’
(Surah Az-Zumar: 9)

Within this framework, general subjects are taught to complement students’ capabilities, equipping them with essential skills for modern life while instilling Islamic values. These subjects serve as a bridge between traditional Islamic knowledge and the practical competencies needed to thrive in contemporary society.

Below are some of the key general subjects offered:

1.  Mathematics

The mathematics curriculum at Tahfizh Makkah School is designed to enhance logical reasoning and quick thinking. By mastering numerical concepts and calculations, students are equipped to address Islamic issues, such as computations in the science of inheritance (Al-Faraid) and other mathematical applications. The program draws inspiration from the contributions of Al-Khwarizmi, the renowned Muslim scholar who laid the foundations of algebra and introduced the concept of algorithms.

2. Indonesian language

The Indonesian language course strengthens students’ communication and writing skills, which are essential for academic success and for conveying Islamic teachings effectively. This subject trains students to organize their thoughts systematically and express them in proper language. Tahfizh Makkah School emphasizes factual narratives, focusing on authentic stories from the lives of the Prophets, the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and esteemed Islamic scholars, avoiding fictional accounts to maintain educational integrity.

3. Physical education

Physical education is an integral part of the curriculum, aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being. This aligns with the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

اَلْمُؤْمِنُ اَلْقَوِيُّ خَيْرٌ وَأَحَبُّ إِلَى اَللَّهِ مِنْ اَلْمُؤْمِنِ اَلضَّعِيفِ

“A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer.”
(Sahih Muslim: 2664; Sunan Ibn Majah: 79, 4168)

4. Natural sciences

The study of natural sciences at Tahfizh Makkah School equips students with an understanding of natural phenomena, including plants, animals, water, air, and life cycles. This approach is deeply rooted in the Quranic perspective:

وَنَزَّلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً مُّبَارَكًا فَأَنبَتْنَا بِهِۦ جَنَّٰتٍ وَحَبَّ ٱلۡحَصِيدِ

“And We have sent down blessed rain from the sky and made grow thereby gardens and grain from the harvest”
(Surah Qaf: 9)

Observing and studying the intricacies of creation such as plants, animals, water cycles, and the atmosphere not only expands one’s scientific understanding but also fosters a sense of awe and gratitude toward the Creator

Teachers not only present scientific concepts but also integrate tauhid values, encouraging students to reflect on the signs of Allah's greatness manifest in the natural world. This combination of scientific and spiritual learning nurtures a sense of wonder and gratitude toward the Creator.

5. Social studies

Social studies provide students with insights into societal structures, ranging from family dynamics to broader community interactions. Lessons focus on social values, effective communication, and environmental awareness, fostering empathy and a sense of social responsibility.

This subject aims to develop students into compassionate individuals who can positively contribute to their communities. As the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

الْمُؤْمِنُ الَّذِي يُخَالِطُ النَّاسَ وَيَصْبِرُ عَلَى أَذَاهُمْ أَعْظَمُ أَجْرًا مِنْ الْمُؤْمِنِ الَّذِي لَا يُخَالِطُ النَّاسَ وَلَا يَصْبِرُ عَلَى أَذَاهُمْ

“The believer who mixes with people and bears their annoyance with patience will have a greater reward than the believer who does not mix with people and does not put up with their annoyance..”
(Sunan Ibn Majah: 4032; Jami` at-Tirmidhi: 2507)

6. Civic education

Civic education at Tahfizh Makkah School instills values of nationalism, love for one’s country, and respect for diversity. This subject prepares students to become responsible citizens who are obedient to their leaders, in line with Islamic teachings that emphasize unity and peace.

Allah ﷻ says in the Quran:

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ أَطِيعُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُواْ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي ٱلۡأَمۡرِ مِنكُمۡ

“O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you.”
(Surah An-Nisa: 59)

With a curriculum that seamlessly integrates religious and general studies, Tahfizh Makkah School strives to nurture not only hafiz and hafizah who excel in Quranic memorization but also intellectually capable individuals prepared to navigate the complexities of the modern world. This holistic approach aims to produce a generation that can contribute positively to the Muslim ummah and the global community.
