Memorizing the Quran is a noble act and a cherished tradition passed down through generations within the Muslim community. In Islam, the Quran is not merely a sacred text but also a comprehensive guide to life, intended to be understood, internalized, and practiced in all aspects of daily living.

At Tahfizh Makkah School, this tradition is preserved and nurtured through a systematic and integrated approach to teaching. Students are encouraged not only to memorize the holy verses but also to extract lessons that are simple, practical, and applicable to their lives. By combining methods of memorization, review (muraja’ah), and comprehension, the school aims to help students form a deep and enduring connection with the Quran.

This approach aspires to make the Quran a constant companion for students, guiding and inspiring them throughout their lives.

A structured memorization schedule

The importance of a well-structured schedule in Quran memorization programs cannot be overstated. At Tahfizh Makkah School, the memorization timetable is meticulously designed to help students achieve their memorization targets optimally without compromising quality. This schedule is also tailored to align with the mental and spiritual development of the students.

Levels I and II

For first- and second-grade students, the memorization program consists of three main sessions each day. The morning session runs from 8:00 AM to 9:15 AM, during which students add new memorization and prepare for their daily review (muraja’ah) under the guidance of their respective halaqah teachers. After a break, the second session is held from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM, designed to be shorter to maintain focus and prevent fatigue. The final session takes place from 2:30 PM until just before the Asr prayer, allowing students to review what they have learned throughout the day and add new verses to their memorization.

The division into three sessions for Levels I and II is intentional, as these younger students are generally not accustomed to spending extended periods with the Quran. This structure serves as a gradual acclimatization process, helping them establish a consistent learning pattern. The aim is to build a solid foundation so that in subsequent levels, they can adapt to longer study durations more effectively.

Levels III to VI

For students in III through V grades, the schedule is streamlined into two main sessions: a morning session from 8:00 AM to 9:15 AM and an afternoon session from 2:30 PM until just before the Asr prayer. This adjustment allows older students to take greater responsibility for managing their time and memorization efforts. Although they are given less structured time compared to the younger levels, these students are expected to manage their muraja’ah independently, ensuring the retention of their extensive memorization.

With their increased maturity, these students focus on reinforcing their memorization using methods taught by scholars. Ibn al-Jawzi, in his book al-Hath ‘ala Hifzhil ‘Ilmi wa Dzikru Kibari al-Huffazh, emphasizes:

يَنْبَغِي لِمَنْ يُرِيدُ الْحِفْظَ أَنْ يَتَشَاغَلَ بِهِ فِي وَقْتِ جَمْعِ الْهَمِّ، وَمَتَى رَأَى نَفْسَهُ مَشْغُولَ الْقَلْبِ تَرَكَ التَّحَفُّظَ، وَيَحْفَظُ قَدْرَ مَا يُمْكِنُ فَإِنَّ الْقَلِيلَ يَثْبُتُ وَالْكَثِيرُ لا يَحُصُلْ

“One who wishes to memorize should do so when their heart is fully focused. If they feel their heart is preoccupied or distracted, they should temporarily pause their memorization. They should memorize according to their capacity, as a small amount retained consistently is better than attempting too much and failing to retain it.”
(al-Hath ‘ala Hifzhil ‘Ilmi wa Dzikru Kibari al-Huffazh, 45:5)

This structured schedule is designed not only to maximize students’ potential but also to prevent burnout and fatigue. Research supports the effectiveness of learning in shorter, focused sessions with adequate breaks, which enhances learning efficiency and information retention compared to prolonged, uninterrupted study sessions (Cepeda et al., 2006).

The talqin method: emulating Angel Jibril's approach

The talqin method is a foundational approach to Quranic education, deeply rooted in the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. At Tahfizh Makkah School, this method is implemented by emulating the way Angel Jibril (peace be upon him) conveyed revelation to the Prophet ﷺ. Though seemingly simple, the process is rich with meaning: the teacher recites Quranic verses with precise tartil and tajwid, and students repeat after them. This interaction trains students to focus on details such as pronunciation, intonation, and the teacher's etiquette in reciting the Quran. As a result, their memorization becomes stronger and more accurate.

By integrating talqin, memorization, review (muraja’ah), and introducing practical tafsir of selected Quranic verses, students are encouraged not only to memorize the Quran but also to comprehend and implement its teachings in their lives.

The talqin method is not merely a pedagogical technique but a practice rooted in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and the early generations of Muslims (salaf). It was explicitly taught and applied by the Prophet ﷺ and his companions. The Prophet ﷺ said:

 خُذُوا الْقُرْآنَ مِنْ أَرْبَعَةٍ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ـ فَبَدَأَ بِهِ ـ وَسَالِمٍ مَوْلَى أَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ، وَمُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ، وَأُبَىِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ‏

"Learn the recitation of Qur'an from four from `Abdullah bin Mas`ud -- he started with him--Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudaifa, Mu`adh bin Jabal and Ubai bin Ka`b."
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 3758, 3808, 4999; Sahih Muslim: 2464; Jami` at-Tirmidhi: 3810)

This hadith underscores the importance of learning the Quran directly from qualified reciters or teachers. Remarkably, the Prophet ﷺ gave this instruction to his companions, who were native Arabic speakers with unparalleled linguistic proficiency. This highlights the enduring relevance of the talqin method, even for those with advanced language skills, let alone for today’s Muslim community, where the majority are non-native Arabic speakers.

The talqin method not only facilitates Quranic learning but also serves as a means to attain blessings through adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions. In this process, the teacher becomes a spiritual guide, bridging the student’s connection with the Quran. A competent teacher ensures that the memorization journey is undertaken with sincerity, fostering an environment of worship and imbuing the process with profound meaning.

The effectiveness of the talqin method is further supported by contemporary research. A study by Ibnu et al. (2023) revealed that 41.8% of students’ Quran reading proficiency is influenced by the combined application of the talaqqi and tahsin methods. The repetitive practice under direct teacher supervision sharpens auditory memory, making it more durable. This guidance enables students not only to memorize but also to master the intricacies of tajwid and makharijul huruf with precision.

Supporting factors for success in memorizing the quran

The success of students in memorizing the Quran at Tahfizh Makkah School is not coincidental. It is the result of a harmonious combination of various supporting factors, all facilitated by Allah's grace. These elements work synergistically to help students maintain and strengthen their memorization.

1. Dedicated, experienced, and committed teachers

A key factor in achieving success is the presence of dedicated and experienced teachers who are deeply committed to their students' progress. Teachers not only guide students in memorizing Quranic verses but also serve as role models in character, patience, and discipline. In Islamic tradition, teachers hold a highly esteemed position, as they shape their students’ character through knowledge and behavior.

Salman Al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) once wrote to Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him):

إِنَّمَا مَثَلُ الْمُعَلِّمِ كَمَثَلِ رَجُلٍ عَمِلَ سِرَاجًا فِي طَرِيقٍ مُظْلِمٍ يَسْتَضِيءُ بِهِ مَنْ مَرَّ بِهِ , وَكُلٌّ يَدْعُو إِلَى الْخَيْرِ

"The example of a teacher is like a man who lights a lamp in a dark path, so that those who pass by can benefit from its light. Every person of knowledge, in essence, calls others to goodness."
(Akhlak al-‘Ulama by al-Ajurri, p. 29)

رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِيْ مُقِيْمَ الصَّلٰوةِ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِيْۖ 

“My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants.”
(Surah Ibrahim: 40)

5. The role of parents in supporting muraja’ah at home

The involvement of parents in accompanying their children during muraja’ah (review) at home is not just a supplementary element but a fundamental foundation for success in Quran memorization and overall education. Muraja’ah is not merely a repetition of memorization; it is a moment filled with spiritual and emotional value. As the primary companions of their children outside school, parents hold an irreplaceable responsibility to shape character, instill perseverance, and motivate their children in maintaining their memorization.

Allah ﷻ says:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا

"O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire...."
(Surah At-Tahrim: 6)

Commenting on this verse, Sheikh Muhammad Jamil Zainu stated:
"Parents (both mother and father), teachers, and society are accountable before Allah for the education of this generation. If they educate them well, this generation will attain happiness, and they themselves will share in that happiness in this world and the Hereafter. However, if they neglect their duty, the generation will face misery, and the sin of that neglect will be upon them."
(Majmu’ah Rasa’il at-Taujihat al-Islamiyyah li Ishlah al-Fard wa al-Mujtama’, 2:195).

The power of intention, consistency, and patience

Memorizing the Quran is a noble act of worship that requires perseverance and unwavering effort. This journey demands a deep commitment to a long and often challenging process. إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّةِ

"(The value of) an action depends on the intention behind it."

أَحَبُّ الأَعْمَالِ إِلَى اللَّهِ تَعَالَى أَدْوَمُهَا وَإِنْ قَلَّ

 "The acts most pleasing to Allah are those which are done continuously, even if they are small."
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 5861, 6464, 6465; Sahih Muslim: 782, 783, 2818; Sunan an-Nasa'i: 762, 1655; Sunan Abi Dawud: 1368)

The anticipation of Quranic examinations inspires a unique zeal among students

However, patience in such moments becomes a source of strength, guiding them to persist in their efforts. Allah ﷻ says:

وَاصْبِرْ فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُضِيْعُ اَجْرَ الْمُحْسِنِيْنَ

"And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good."
(Surah Hud: 115)

The achievements of these students are not only a source of collective pride but also a reminder of the importance of anchoring our lives, families, and communities in the principles of faith and piety. Through this, we are called to make the Quran not only a text to be memorized but a living guide shaping our character and society.
